Gig Economy

Modern society is more interested in living life fully. They are more interested in taking up short-term assignments or flexible jobs instead of working standard 9–5 jobs. Abundant gig opportunities, which come with a sense of control over time & choices, are spicing up the gig economy.

Gig work involves performing short-term, task-based assignments outside of a traditional employer-employee relationship. Payment is made per task (or "gig") rather than as a fixed salary.

The growth of the gig economy is going mainstream and completely reshaping employment & hiring.

Some examples are: Online platform gigs – Ridesharing (Rapido, Uber, Ola) Delivery – Zomato, Swiggy Home & Skilled Services (Urban Company) Professional Services (Upwork, Fiverr)

There are other variants outside of a typical employee.

Independent contractor/freelancer – Skilled labour & professionals – Work on project-based work with high autonomy. Example – A software developer hired by a startup for a 3-month project to build a mobile app. A graphic designer contracted for an event promotion.

Temporary worker – They get into role-based employment, often filling a traditional job position for a limited time. Recruitment Process Outsourcing (RPO) company Taggd cites that the formal temporary workforce in India is currently around 5 to 5.5 million and is expected to almost double to 10 million by 2030.

An accountant brought in for a fixed 3-month term to assist a company's finance team during the annual audit and tax filing season. A store manager hired for a 2-month period to handle the festive rush in a retail store.
